How can I get my flat-top stove clean and without any scratches or spots?

I have a iniquitous-top flat stove that has many marks that I cannot get clean with dish soap or scrubbing. We are active out of our rental and need to get this stove-top looking like new.

Take a open-handed pot; put in 1/4 cup dish washer detergent; (the kind you use in an inevitable dish washer ) then fill half full with very hot water....
stir til the soap powder dissolves..
Take 2 or 3 small terry towels and dip in detergent...
