I don't know how to use my Cuisinart coffee maker?

My parents straight gave me a Cuisinart coffee maker but I am unsure how to use it. When I open the lid on the top, on the inside is a basket with a helve. Do I put the coffee beans right into that or do I use a filter and put the filter in this basket?

all i can reckon of is that it is a factory mistake. it cant be that hard to work a Coffey manufacture
